How I Reduce Waste…

Reducing the amount of rubbish we throw away is so important for keeping our world healthy. Lately I have been really finding it interesting to explore ways of reducing my waste and finding re-usable substitutes. I have been focussing on these swaps for around 4 weeks now and I have already noticing that our bin bags are not filling up half as quickly. For example me and Liam would easily fill our rubbish bin with in a few days, now I can’t remember the last time I changed the bin!

I have only made a handful of swaps and there are a lot more I am working on, but today I would love to share with you 6 easy swaps I have made so far.

Kitchen Roll

I was finding me and Liam would throw away massive amounts of used kitchen roll daily. We decided to swap the kitchen roll for washable micro-fibre cloths. These are amazing! They can be used and the. Washed with our daily laundry load and it’s so easy. I picked up 6 from Lidl for only £3.00 and the 6 are working out perfectly for us.

Carrier Bags

Me and Liam both work in a food Shop, so it’s so easy for us to pick up our shopping while at work, however we was noticing that we would be buying and. Or rescuing a carrier bag daily. Not only is that filling up our landfill with plastic bags it’s also costing us a small fortune! We worked Ito it that we could be spending around £24.00 a year on carrier bags and I would much rather spend that on other more exciting things! To avoid this we brought our self a reusable shopper from Primark it only cost £1.00 and it’s bigger and stronger than a plastic bag and so much better for the environment!

Sanitary items

I know that this won’t apply to everyone but for me this was one of the best swaps I have made so far! Did you know that in one disposable sanitary pad there is the same amount of plastic equivalent to 3 plastic bags, that’s a whole lot of plastic to waste over our lifetime! Also sanitary items are bloody expensive! That’s why I have donated all my sanitary items to family and I have started using a menstrual cup! Not only is this a cheaper alternative as one cup can last up to 10 years! It’s also saving a whole lot of sanitary items ending up in landfill. I have a few more post planned about this if your interested in knowing more about re usable menstrual products just let me know and I’ll share some more information with you!

This was something I never payed much attention to, however after looking into how much waste I was producing I noticed I could easily lessen this by shopping smart with produce. I have been buying loose as and when I can and not putting them into those little produce bags most supermarkets provide. This is a complete waste of plastic and 100% not needed.

Food Shopping

Linking with above it became clear to us that we was throwing a lot of food away due to not using it in time of use by dates or just over buying. To avoid this waste we have started to make a strict meal plan and only buy what we need for it. We freeze short life food items or use them up first to avoid waste. Also before we write our shopping list we look at what we already Have in the cupboards and fridge. By doing this we usually do not need to buy half as much food shopping and thus saving a load of money! We have worked on getting our weekly shop for two down to between £20 and £30 and it’s great!

Water bottles

I have never realised just how much of a waste it is to buy bottled water. Not only does it cost far to much money it’s also littering our world with empty plastic bottles. Switching to a reusable water bottle not only has saved us money but the environment to. And if your worried about the taste of tap water, its exactly the same as bottled!

I really encourage you to make some of these swaps also, I set you the challenge of just making one swap a week for a month and I am sure you will be shocked with what you DONT throw away!

If you would like more posts like this just let me know!

Confessions Of A Beauty Hoarder

A few days ago I was talking to a lovely group of fellow bloggers and we were discussing all our beauty hoarder confessions. Some of these really tickled me and it got me thinking about all of my hoarder confessions too. I had the idea that this would make a rather interesting post to talk about on my blog so here I am bringing you some confessions of a beauty hoarder. I really hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed hearing about them.

How many of these confessions are you guilty of?

Unused Products

I am awful for this! I will buy so many new products that I am super excited to try however I always end up using the same products over and over. I even buy products knowing I will never use them! I have been known to buy products just for the packaging or because they were on sale. After doing this for years I now have draws full of unused products that I just cant seem to bring myself to throw away, yet I know I will still buy more in the future.

Self Control

On those rare occasions I do need to buy something new that is beauty related I will walk into the shop with the idea that I will only buy what I need. I do so well for around 30 seconds, then I go crazy and with no self control fill my baskets with so much beauty crap. I know I will always do this yet I always feel so optimistic that one day I will just walk out of boots with the one toothbrush that I needed.

@halfbloodpixie also confessed to doing this!

I didn’t buy anything this January…No wait I did,  but that was because I went into a beauty store and I have no self control!

Out Of Date Products

When we were talking about and confessing all our beauty hoarder sins this was a topic which we all confessed to! I tend to have a beauty clear out every 6 months or so, and yet I will always find products which are way past  their use by dates! where do these products come from that what I want to know haha!

@stephanie_vivienne Confessed

” I have just cleaned out my beauty stuff… it was chaos. I am pretty sure their is lipsticks in there from 10 years that I have not touched since..(impulse purchases)

@Kirakiratsu Confessed

I have just thrown out my first eye shadow pallete (brought 6 years ago)

@evyclocharde Confessed

just sorted through my make up…5 year old foundation be gone!

Do not worry girls we have ALL been there!

I hope you have found this post a little bit of a giggle! I would love to hear all your beauty hoarder confessions too! dont forget to give these girls a follow they upload the most amazing content on their blogs its defiantly not to be missed!

Its been a little while since I last published anything on here, if you  follow me on Twitter you will know that I have been taking a little bit of time away from blogging to focus on work and catching up with a little bit of blog admin. but it feels so good to be back!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you ALL for 100 followers on It means the world to me and with every follow I am getting closer and closer to my dream of becoming a full time blogger!

Thankyou! Thankyou! Thankyou!

The Other day, I went into the local town and had a browse through all the old Christmas gift sets. In boots They had a HUGE HUGE HUGE sale on so everything was 70% off! I picked up quite a few bits and pieces and I thought I would share them all with you.

IMG_0097The first gift set I was drawn to was the soap and glory glow maintenance set. I immediately spotted the bag in came in and knew I had to have it. the bag itself has two pockets so will make the perfect toiletry bag and storage bag. I am currently storing some knickers I do n0t tend to wear everyday in them and it fits them in perfectly. The actual products inside the bag are lovely too, I love Soap and Glory so I knew I would be happy with what ever  was inside. The gift set came with miniature;

  • Riotousness Body Butter
  • the scrub of your life
  • Clean On Me Body Wash
  • Vitamin C Facial Wash
  • Hand Food Hand Cream

Next I spotted the Zoella Range. I have had a few bits and bobs from her collection beforeIMG_0090 but none of her Zoella Lifestyle Range. When I saw her weekly goal Planner was just £3 I had to have it! I personally feel that the original price of £10 was rather pricey though so I am pleased I purchased it in the sale. This is a lovely little planner however I would of loved for it too include the weekend days too, as these are the days I find myself to be the most productive.

As I walked along the aisle, I spotted the Make Up section. I had my eye on a few things from here during December so I picked up ALOT from this section! This year so far I have been really enjoying trying new make-up and learning and experimenting new ways to apply it. So I loved picking up new gift sets to expand my collection.

IMG_0086.jpgFirst Up I picked up this beautiful No7 Make up brush set. I have never used any No7 brushes and this looked too beautiful not to try. The bag they came with is also stunning and looks so lovely on my vanity storage. The brushes are super soft and work really well too, I am yet to give them a good wash so I cant give a full review yet but I am so far very much in love with them!

Finally I went a little bit crazy with the Sleek gift sets, I picked up far too many of these gift sets but I am so pleased I did! I adore Sleek Makeup it is defiantly one of my favourite brands to use. I always find their products are such a good quality and I cant fault them so I stocked up!

I loaded my basket with…

The Pout 4 Perfection Set…

The Sleek Surprises Set…

The Pout And Polish Set X2…

I have so far loved all this products and will definitely be including them in a upcoming make-up post so keep your eyes peeled for that!

I managed to receive so massive bargains I spent just £30 pounds in total and brought so many gift sets! my receipt told me I had made a saving off nearly £80! so I walked out of boots feeling exceptionally good.

I love shopping in boots and I love sharing with you what I have brought with you even more! You can find my other boots hauls here…

A Festive Tea Room Visit

Today Me and my dad went to our local town to get the last little bits and bobs ready for Christmas! And I wanted to share our day with you….

As Niether  of us drive we caught the bus in, it’s around a half an hour bus ride and to be honest it is fairly pretty, The route takes you round a few pretty villages and at this time of year it always looks so festive!

First we headed to a few shops. The town was crazy busy! I think everyone had the same idea as us. We picked up some gifts from a number of shops and by now we were gasping for a cup of tea!

26027184_10208596293303407_1957048432_oWe headed to our favourite ever tearoom! My dad shares a love for a tearoom so we’re the perfect pair! This is a themed tearoom. And it’s themed like World War 2 the menus are called “Today’s Rations” The staff wear clothes of the era and they play old war time songs. It’s so lovely and during Christmas time it’s feels super cosy.

The Tearoom has hundreds of teas for you to choose from and they present it in a super 26024759_10208596293503412_1913583565_ocute little tea menu. I choose to go for a Blue flower Earl Grey tea and my dad decided on an Assam Tea. Both where delicious!

26036278_10208596292783394_2021702291_oI loved the fact that the bathroom had wallpaper that looked like old adverts and news paper articles. I loved it and it’s uniqueness.

After a couple of cups of tea, we headed back into the busy streets and picked up the last gifts or two. This worked up quite the appetite so we opted for a very cheeky Wimpy lunch! It was super yummy but oh so filling!

25993316_10208596292423385_2128826520_o (1)A final walk round the shops and we was done and dusted! We had just missed a bus so we headed to a pub for a cheeky drink! The pub was rammed so we only stayed for the one.

By now it was starting to get dark, so the Christmas lights had started to shine. These were super pretty and put a huge smile on my face!

It’s been such a lovely day and now I am 100% ready for Christmas to commence!

Christmas Shopping Tips and Tricks

I feel as if today’s post links really nicely with yesterdays post, if you have not already had a little read of my Christmas gift guide for her, then you can find it here. Today’s post is all about my tips and tricks for ensuring all your Christmas shopping runs smoothly and stress free.

Start Early

For me this is so important, we have such a huge family so its vital I start thinking about budgets and what I would like to buy everyone.I start the whole process off in September by buying a new notebook, that I dedicate to all my Christmas needs. I will then allow my self some time to write a list of everyone I would like to buy gifts for and look at my finances and decide suitable budgets.Without spending a little bit of time doing this ill go crazy and spend all my money and have hundreds and hundreds of presents to wrap and gift. These lists keep me focussed.

Keep Your Eyes Peeled

I have picked up some amazing presents and really good prices by just keeping my eyes on lookout while I am out and about. I do this as soon as I have written my list and If I see it I buy it. The amount of times I have seen something and a week later its gone and not to be brought back into stock is heart breaking. By Picking up bits and bobs over a few months and storing them away is so handy, you end up with some amazing gifts and really good prices and when the shops are super busy with everyone doing there shopping you are almost done so you can enjoy the festive season even more.

Shop With A Focus

Sometimes you cant pick up everything in little bits so you need a big shopping trip. Its important to do this with a plan and plenty of time.Allow time for browsing and long queues. Bring a friend or family member and make it an event! stop for lunch and have a lovely day, enjoy the festive displays and the atmosphere.

Before you go agree on the shops you would like to visit and what your looking for this keeps your shopping focussed and then your only entering shops you need to. if you have some spare time you can always wonder round the shops you didn’t have planned

Wrap As You Go

Dont leave all your Christmas wrapping to the last minute, you wont enjoy it and it can become very boring. I love wrapping presents and I love spending time to add bows and Ribbons. I enjoy wrapping presents , I usually make myself a hot chocolate listen to Buble and wrap away. I find if I wrap presents as soon as I buy them I enjoy it alot more, I also love looking at the piles of presents building up under the tree. it makes me super happy.

I hope you have found my tips and tricks helpful, if you have any more please let me know! I still feel like I havnt quite mastered the Christmas shopping but I am getting there.

A Festive December…

Todays post is going to be all about what I have been/will be getting up to in the month of December. I have so much going on this month is going to be so hard to document it all. I am going to be posting lots on Instagram so make sure your following me on there @LifeWithFernie. Ill be posting lots of pictures about my December so keep a look out.

To kick start the festive Celebrations, Me and Liam will be spending a day out in a near by town going Christmas shopping. We have so much shopping to do, so I am hoping the say will be successful with maybe a cheeky Mcdonalds lunch thrown in aswell. What kind of shopper are you? an on line shopper or a out and about shopper? I definitely prefer looking at all the shops and picking the presents up that way. I just feel Like I pick up the best kinds of presents this way.

Our town holds a torch light precession. this is an event where everyone receives glow sticks and torches, We all March down the high street then sing carols in our local park. this is such a lovely event and something I defiantly wont miss. This is also held in the village I grew up in, I have to admit I prefer the village on to the town one, I think its because it holds such a sentimental value for me as it feels so familiar. I just love it. this year will be extra special  as my mum is taking part in one of the singing performances, this is something I especially cant miss this year.

Liams family will always have a HUGE family meal to celebrate Christmas. This year there will be around 30 of us all meeting for a huge Christmas dinner, this will be so lovely and I cant wait for good food and great company. This is something I look forward to every year, and this year as there is so many of us, its going to be hopefully the best Christmas meal ever.

Finally When its a little closer to Christmas I will be cooking me and Liam our own Christmas dinner for just the two of us. On the actual Christmas day we are having lunch at his parents house so I thought it would be a lovely idea if we also have our own Christmas dinner too. After all can you have too many Christmas dinners? what id your favourite part of your Christmas dinner? mine is defiantly pigs in blankets YUM YUM!

I hope you have enjoyed reading what I am so far planning to do this christmas, if you have any ideas that I must do let me know, I feel like I dont have many festive things planned in the run up to Christmas.

Monday 14th August 2017

IMG_2971Beautiful hot weather today so me and Liam cleaned out the guinea pigs hutch, our guinea pigs Charlie and walker got a good play in their outdoor run in the glorious sunshine. IMG_2953this made me so happy as I love watching the piggy’s run about on the grass. I also had a lovely smoky cheese and pancetta pasta for my lunch. Yum Yum!

Tuesday 15th August 2017

I had work in the evening however in the morning I popped into town with Liams family we popped into “cheeky one” AKA costa and I had a very nice scone with cream and jam delicious 🙂 IMG_2981

Wednesday 16th August 2017

Today was super chilly so me and Liam went to costa again and I had a HUGE hot chocolate to keep warm, very cheeky but oh so yummy! Worked again in the evening so earning lots of pennies to spend in boots and super drug HORAY! IMG_2983

Thursday 17th August 2017

Today I had my first hospital appointment regarding my hearing, I was so so so nervous about going as I had no idea what to expect, the lady I saw was so lovely and put me to ease really well, I find out the results next week at another hospital appointment fingers crossed its not a too gloomy result.

Friday 18th August 2017

Its been a working day for me today, lots of blog related bits needed doing today but I love my days like this, makes me feel so calm typing away on my laptop drinking buckets of earl grey tea and listening to nothing but distant conversations. I feel so lucky to have my blog, its a place I can escape from the busyness around me, I LUV it ❤

Our 5 Years <3

As promised in my previous blog, This is how myself and Liam celebrated our 5 year anniversary together. It was so so so lovely to spend some quality time with him and have the most perfect day. Cheers to another 5 years Liam… you lucky lucky fella 😉

IMG_2867We started of the day with a cup of tea and jam on toast at my favourite ever  tea room in Colchester called Jacquelines this is a world war 2 themed tea room. It’s so very lovely. With old war-time music and decor to match. they offer hundreds of different teas all presented in their tea menu and their menu made me smile “today’s rations” it was called.I loved the uniqueness to this tea room and definitely will be returning. I was in my element here! I really am a 90-year-old woman at heart and I am proud of it haha!

next up we visited Colchester castle, we loved looking at the old coins and especially loved looking at the prisons and reading about Mathew Hopkins it was definitely educational.20793796_1674060389291958_28968531_o IMG_2874Both of us had visited Colchester castle a few years ago however this was our first visit since it was renovated and we could not fault it at all. We felt we walked away from the museum knowing so much more about colchester history and Britain we were very impressed.

The third stop on our day out was to a little museum also near the castle called Hollytrees. this museum focusses on modern history and how the home was run. This was really special to me as I visited this a lot with my Nan when I was a little girl. This museum was only small however me and Liam loved looking at the old Victorian household items it did make us giggle and appreciate how lucky we are to have the technology and products we do have today. IMG_2876My favourite part of this museum must be the old victorian dolls house they had on display, I loved all the detail and how pretty it was. It was crazy to think that a little girl once played with it and honestly i was jelous.

By this point me and Liam were getting hungry Liam more than me (he never stops being hungry!) so we decided to have our meal and Kaspas. This restaurant has got to be one of the best ever this is because it’s a resturant completely dedicated to deserts. you can choose for so many different options however we chose to share a fudge chocolate brownie milkshakeIMG_2879 then share two deserts
IMG_2882 one being a crushed oreo waffle and the other being a strawberry cheesecake sundae. When our deserts were delivered we knew we had made a mistake! they were HUGE! we couldn’t even finish them. But Oh me oh my t they were so good. I was in sugar heaven!

To finish of the day we wondered round some shops, there wasnt really much we wanted to buy but we needed to walk off our puddings, the walk hand in hand-made me smile lots! almost as much as i smiled eating at kaspas 😉

We had the most wonderful day spending time together and reflecting on the past 5 years. having  time together just us two doesn’t happen very often but when it does its so special to me and I think Liam likes it to. Liam makes me so unbelievably happy and I am so grateful to have him in my life ❤

I hope you enjoyed reading about what we got up to, I know I have loved writitng about it. Please feel free to coment and share I would love to hear from you.

Cheerio for now,

Fern xx
