How I Reduce Waste…

Reducing the amount of rubbish we throw away is so important for keeping our world healthy. Lately I have been really finding it interesting to explore ways of reducing my waste and finding re-usable substitutes. I have been focussing on these swaps for around 4 weeks now and I have already noticing that our bin bags are not filling up half as quickly. For example me and Liam would easily fill our rubbish bin with in a few days, now I can’t remember the last time I changed the bin!

I have only made a handful of swaps and there are a lot more I am working on, but today I would love to share with you 6 easy swaps I have made so far.

Kitchen Roll

I was finding me and Liam would throw away massive amounts of used kitchen roll daily. We decided to swap the kitchen roll for washable micro-fibre cloths. These are amazing! They can be used and the. Washed with our daily laundry load and it’s so easy. I picked up 6 from Lidl for only £3.00 and the 6 are working out perfectly for us.

Carrier Bags

Me and Liam both work in a food Shop, so it’s so easy for us to pick up our shopping while at work, however we was noticing that we would be buying and. Or rescuing a carrier bag daily. Not only is that filling up our landfill with plastic bags it’s also costing us a small fortune! We worked Ito it that we could be spending around £24.00 a year on carrier bags and I would much rather spend that on other more exciting things! To avoid this we brought our self a reusable shopper from Primark it only cost £1.00 and it’s bigger and stronger than a plastic bag and so much better for the environment!

Sanitary items

I know that this won’t apply to everyone but for me this was one of the best swaps I have made so far! Did you know that in one disposable sanitary pad there is the same amount of plastic equivalent to 3 plastic bags, that’s a whole lot of plastic to waste over our lifetime! Also sanitary items are bloody expensive! That’s why I have donated all my sanitary items to family and I have started using a menstrual cup! Not only is this a cheaper alternative as one cup can last up to 10 years! It’s also saving a whole lot of sanitary items ending up in landfill. I have a few more post planned about this if your interested in knowing more about re usable menstrual products just let me know and I’ll share some more information with you!

Produce

This was something I never payed much attention to, however after looking into how much waste I was producing I noticed I could easily lessen this by shopping smart with produce. I have been buying loose as and when I can and not putting them into those little produce bags most supermarkets provide. This is a complete waste of plastic and 100% not needed.

Food Shopping

Linking with above it became clear to us that we was throwing a lot of food away due to not using it in time of use by dates or just over buying. To avoid this waste we have started to make a strict meal plan and only buy what we need for it. We freeze short life food items or use them up first to avoid waste. Also before we write our shopping list we look at what we already Have in the cupboards and fridge. By doing this we usually do not need to buy half as much food shopping and thus saving a load of money! We have worked on getting our weekly shop for two down to between £20 and £30 and it’s great!

Water bottles

I have never realised just how much of a waste it is to buy bottled water. Not only does it cost far to much money it’s also littering our world with empty plastic bottles. Switching to a reusable water bottle not only has saved us money but the environment to. And if your worried about the taste of tap water, its exactly the same as bottled!

I really encourage you to make some of these swaps also, I set you the challenge of just making one swap a week for a month and I am sure you will be shocked with what you DONT throw away!

If you would like more posts like this just let me know!

Food Shop Haul And Meal Plan

Today I thought I would share with you a weekly shop for both me and Liam. If you read my last post Dear 2018 you would know that one of my New Years goal was to loose some of the weight I have put back on. So We tried to plan this weeks meals more healthy than we are used to but still enjoyable.

This food shop cost us a total of around the £40 mark and that should keep us going for a week we had some bits left from last weeks food shop aswell. We did our main bulk of shopping in Lidl and brought the fruit from Sainsbury’s. In me and Liam’s opinion the fruit from Lidl never last longer than a day. Everything else from Lidl has been super yummy and can’t complain at All! I hope you enjoy this slightly different post and if you would like more of these let me know!

I Meal Plan every week and hang up the weeks menu in the kitchen. I brought this lovely chalk board from B&M bargains ages ago now and I love it. With out meal planning I would be lost, and I love how it looks in my kitchen.

I only tend to plan our evening meals, this works best for me and Liam as we both work shifts so meal planning lunches as well would be a nightmare! I always make sure there is wraps and an array of fillings for our lunches and there is always some other bits and bobs in the cupboard for lunch as well.

This Week We Are Having…

This is the Main bulk of our shopping. We love the wraps from Lidl so soft and they keep really well to! The tropical juice has also been a bit hit to! I love it. It’s the perfect drink to have at breakfast and tastes amazing to. Me and Liam eat so many rice cakes at the minute, I especially love them with cucumber and a little cream cheese a delicious lunch.

Here we have everything for the freezer. We decided to buy lots of frozen veg that we can have with out meals. Me and Liam eat a lot of chicken so we picked up this huge bag of chicken breast for around £3, we are yet to try it but fingers crossed they taste as good as the Lidl chilled chicken breast. I had meal planned to have a ready meal one night while Liam is working late and I came across this chicken and vegetable pasta. It looked really yummy and was fairly good for you to, so I thought I would give it a go.

We picked up a handful of bits for the fridge too, we go for semi skimmed milk as it tastes almost identical to whole milk while being a little bit better for you. We also picked up some light cream cheese, I love this on my rice cakes for a snack or a quick lunch DELICOUS!

I absolutely adore crisps! There my favourite go to snack! So when I saw these in lidl I had to pick them up. I’m hoping there going to be a slightly healthier to my favourites. This girls can not give up her crisps!

Finally from Sainsbury’s we picked up a couple of different types of fruit for snacking on throughout the day! The strawberries I have already eaten a couple and they were lush! And the apples were amazing too! Really good quality fruit which only came to a couple of pounds, happy days!

I hope you have found this post somewhat interesting and if you would like more of these let me know, I rather enjoyed writing them.
