Treats To Your Door Review

I was recently asked by a brand new company called Treats to your door to review one of their boxes. After a little bit of research into who this company was I was thrilled. My weakness is sweeties so anything to fuel this is a yes from me! I was asked to purchase one box at the price of £3.50inc deliveryand then review it. The company has promised to send out an additional 2 boxes free of charge which I thought was extremely kind.

Placing An Order

This was super easy to do, I believe they are Instagram based comapny so to order a box I sent them a DM message to which they replied really quickly. I passed on my shipping details and payed via paypal. I received an order confirmation email within seconds of placing the order. I cant fault this at all. Great service.

Delivery

Unfortunately I cant give this a shining review. Delivery took over 4 weeks. I do however understand that the snow fall earlier this month threw a massive spanner in the works and boxes had gone missing and took a while to be delivered. this is completely  understandable and expected if I am honest. When I contacted Treats to your door questioning where my parcel is they replied very apologetic and explained the issues they were having with the snow. At the end of this message they explained if I hadn’t received my box within the next couple of days please get back in touch.

With that in mind I waited still very pleased with the overall service. A week went by and still no parcel so I messaged again. To my surprise I had no reply. I continued contacting them with no replies. I was very disappointed.

The Package

After a few people on twitter started discussing the company and explaining they had the same issues as me, I had kinda given up hope of receiving my box. but then to my surprise my box was delivered! the box itself was extremely bent up with a huge hole in it. and peering through I could see that a lot of the sweets were loose in the box.

Treats to your doorThe box itself was plain with a hand written address. when I opened the box I was greeted by a little thank you note that explained they were sorry for the delay. (Lovely touch) and they explained what sweets I had received. The box was plain and presentation was sort of IMG_0205bland. I think some sort of tissue paper or some sort of colour would really make this box stand out, but all companies have to start somewhere. Some of the sweets where wrapped in a little plastic wallet which made the perfect little snack size. Unfortunately I assume due to transit a lot of my sweets had fallen out of these little plastic pockets.

The Sweets

In my box I received:

  • Love hearts
  • white chocolate Jazzies
  • Fried Eggs
  • Strawbs

All the sweets tasted amazing and where all off high quality. I could not fault them at all! I wish the box did contain a few more sweets but I’m greedy so I will always want more haha!

Overall I would give the box a 6/10 a think its a really lovely idea that with a little more work could easily become a 10 out of 10!

Custard Cream Cake!

Today me and Liam decided we would spend our afternoon baking. Baking is something we both love to do together. We have always loved baking together and during our 5 and a half years together we have baked and eaten a lot of cakes! Today we felt like trying to bake something new. After a little bit of googling and pinteresting recipes we came across the lovely Jane from www.janespatisserie.com Her website is filled with hundreds of amazing cakes to bake and try. Her website is well worth a visit!

You can follow my Pinterest here

We loved the look of so many cakes but settled on making her Custard Cream Cupcakes. How delish!

You can find the exact recipe we followed here…

All the ingredients were easy to find and we had most of them sitting in our cupboards. The recipe was also so easy to follow, if we can do it anyone can!

As tradition with baking me and Liam both had a little taste of the cake batter and it tasted exactly like a custard cream! It tasted amazing and we could not wait to try them when cooked.

We gave the cakes an extra 5 minuets in the oven than Jane recommends and the cakes came out perfectly golden brown on top. The had a lovely rise and looked a perfect shape for decorating. After cooling we made up the butter cream. We added to much butter to this and it ended up a little softer than we would of liked, if we had more icing sugar this could of been easily fixed but not to worry it still tasted glorious! Jane decorated hers beautifully, us on the other hand just chucked the icing on and placed half a custard cream biscuit on the top. (our icing was not thick enough to hold a whole one)

Taste Test

At the end of the day this is the most important part of baking. I had high hopes for the overall taste of the cake as along the way it tasted incredible! Unfortunately the cake its self felt rather dense and the cooked cake had lost a fair bit of the custard cream flavouring.,However the icing tasted amazing I could eat bowls of that stuff and of course the custard cream on top was as yummy as always. Overall I would give these cakes a good 7/10 and Liam gave them a solid 8.5/10

If you have any recipes you think I should try, let me know! I am all for eating some more cakes haha!

Super Easy Sausage Rolls

[affilinet_performance_ad size=300×250]

This is a post I never thought I would write. My cooking and baking abilities are not to a high standard but I really do try! I love to cook and bake and its something I would love to get better at. One thing I fell like I have really mastered is these super easy home made sausage rolls  and I am super excited to share my recipe with you!

I will warn you now, I am terrible at explaining this but I am hoping I make sort of sense haha!

If you recreate these I would love to here about it! Tweet me @LifeWithFernie or show me on Instagram @LifeWithFernie. I cant wait to see them!

You Will Need:

  • Puff Pastry
  • 8 Sausages
  • A dash of Milk
  • Baking Paper

Method:

Gather all your ingredients together and preheat the oven to 200c. I always find that really  Having everything I will need in front of me really helps me feel organised and creates an environment I can work better in.

Roll out your puff pastry so its around Half a CM thick  and place it on a sheet of baking paper.Alternatively you could be incredibly lazy and buy pre-rolled out pastry that already comes on a baking sheet (this is what I did)

Remove the sausage skins and place the sausage meat into a bowl. I find the IMG_0034easiest way to do this is by using kitchen scissors and cutting the skins off. Once you have a bowl of sausage meat, mix the meat together (so they no longer look like sausages) and add a pinch of salt pepper and mix herbs. I love doing this but season to your taste.

IMG_0037Now its time to place the sausage meat onto the pastry. I start by placing little bits of sausage meat around 1cm away from the edge of the pastry and keep adding the meat along the pastry. To make a long sausage along the pastry. Then using your fingers and a little bit of milk dampen the pastry all the way along this will help the pastry to stick together.

Next step is to Roll the pastry over the sausage meat and cut of any pastry that is IMG_0040left.Using your fingers squash the two ends of pastry together to make sure its all sealed.Using a sharp Knife make cuts along the sausage I tend to make a cut every 4cm or so.

IMG_0043Place the sausage roll and baking paper on a baking tray and cook in the oven for  30mins on 200c. Finally when the sausage roll is cooked remove from the oven and while still hot cut into your bite size pieces I tend to use the cuts I made as a guide.

I hope you have been inspired to make your own sausage rolls! do not forget to send me pictures if you have recreated this recipe!

Food Shop Haul And Meal Plan

Today I thought I would share with you a weekly shop for both me and Liam. If you read my last post Dear 2018 you would know that one of my New Years goal was to loose some of the weight I have put back on. So We tried to plan this weeks meals more healthy than we are used to but still enjoyable.

This food shop cost us a total of around the £40 mark and that should keep us going for a week we had some bits left from last weeks food shop aswell. We did our main bulk of shopping in Lidl and brought the fruit from Sainsbury’s. In me and Liam’s opinion the fruit from Lidl never last longer than a day. Everything else from Lidl has been super yummy and can’t complain at All! I hope you enjoy this slightly different post and if you would like more of these let me know!

I Meal Plan every week and hang up the weeks menu in the kitchen. I brought this lovely chalk board from B&M bargains ages ago now and I love it. With out meal planning I would be lost, and I love how it looks in my kitchen.

I only tend to plan our evening meals, this works best for me and Liam as we both work shifts so meal planning lunches as well would be a nightmare! I always make sure there is wraps and an array of fillings for our lunches and there is always some other bits and bobs in the cupboard for lunch as well.

This Week We Are Having…

This is the Main bulk of our shopping. We love the wraps from Lidl so soft and they keep really well to! The tropical juice has also been a bit hit to! I love it. It’s the perfect drink to have at breakfast and tastes amazing to. Me and Liam eat so many rice cakes at the minute, I especially love them with cucumber and a little cream cheese a delicious lunch.

Here we have everything for the freezer. We decided to buy lots of frozen veg that we can have with out meals. Me and Liam eat a lot of chicken so we picked up this huge bag of chicken breast for around £3, we are yet to try it but fingers crossed they taste as good as the Lidl chilled chicken breast. I had meal planned to have a ready meal one night while Liam is working late and I came across this chicken and vegetable pasta. It looked really yummy and was fairly good for you to, so I thought I would give it a go.

We picked up a handful of bits for the fridge too, we go for semi skimmed milk as it tastes almost identical to whole milk while being a little bit better for you. We also picked up some light cream cheese, I love this on my rice cakes for a snack or a quick lunch DELICOUS!

I absolutely adore crisps! There my favourite go to snack! So when I saw these in lidl I had to pick them up. I’m hoping there going to be a slightly healthier to my favourites. This girls can not give up her crisps!

Finally from Sainsbury’s we picked up a couple of different types of fruit for snacking on throughout the day! The strawberries I have already eaten a couple and they were lush! And the apples were amazing too! Really good quality fruit which only came to a couple of pounds, happy days!

I hope you have found this post somewhat interesting and if you would like more of these let me know, I rather enjoyed writing them.
