How I Reduce Waste…

Reducing the amount of rubbish we throw away is so important for keeping our world healthy. Lately I have been really finding it interesting to explore ways of reducing my waste and finding re-usable substitutes. I have been focussing on these swaps for around 4 weeks now and I have already noticing that our bin bags are not filling up half as quickly. For example me and Liam would easily fill our rubbish bin with in a few days, now I can’t remember the last time I changed the bin!

I have only made a handful of swaps and there are a lot more I am working on, but today I would love to share with you 6 easy swaps I have made so far.

Kitchen Roll

I was finding me and Liam would throw away massive amounts of used kitchen roll daily. We decided to swap the kitchen roll for washable micro-fibre cloths. These are amazing! They can be used and the. Washed with our daily laundry load and it’s so easy. I picked up 6 from Lidl for only £3.00 and the 6 are working out perfectly for us.

Carrier Bags

Me and Liam both work in a food Shop, so it’s so easy for us to pick up our shopping while at work, however we was noticing that we would be buying and. Or rescuing a carrier bag daily. Not only is that filling up our landfill with plastic bags it’s also costing us a small fortune! We worked Ito it that we could be spending around £24.00 a year on carrier bags and I would much rather spend that on other more exciting things! To avoid this we brought our self a reusable shopper from Primark it only cost £1.00 and it’s bigger and stronger than a plastic bag and so much better for the environment!

Sanitary items

I know that this won’t apply to everyone but for me this was one of the best swaps I have made so far! Did you know that in one disposable sanitary pad there is the same amount of plastic equivalent to 3 plastic bags, that’s a whole lot of plastic to waste over our lifetime! Also sanitary items are bloody expensive! That’s why I have donated all my sanitary items to family and I have started using a menstrual cup! Not only is this a cheaper alternative as one cup can last up to 10 years! It’s also saving a whole lot of sanitary items ending up in landfill. I have a few more post planned about this if your interested in knowing more about re usable menstrual products just let me know and I’ll share some more information with you!

Produce

This was something I never payed much attention to, however after looking into how much waste I was producing I noticed I could easily lessen this by shopping smart with produce. I have been buying loose as and when I can and not putting them into those little produce bags most supermarkets provide. This is a complete waste of plastic and 100% not needed.

Food Shopping

Linking with above it became clear to us that we was throwing a lot of food away due to not using it in time of use by dates or just over buying. To avoid this waste we have started to make a strict meal plan and only buy what we need for it. We freeze short life food items or use them up first to avoid waste. Also before we write our shopping list we look at what we already Have in the cupboards and fridge. By doing this we usually do not need to buy half as much food shopping and thus saving a load of money! We have worked on getting our weekly shop for two down to between £20 and £30 and it’s great!

Water bottles

I have never realised just how much of a waste it is to buy bottled water. Not only does it cost far to much money it’s also littering our world with empty plastic bottles. Switching to a reusable water bottle not only has saved us money but the environment to. And if your worried about the taste of tap water, its exactly the same as bottled!

I really encourage you to make some of these swaps also, I set you the challenge of just making one swap a week for a month and I am sure you will be shocked with what you DONT throw away!

If you would like more posts like this just let me know!

Where Have I been? A New Blog?

It has been such a long time since I have written on here, almost two months to the day! this has been for many reasons but the main one being that my mental health had took a bit of a turn, and my motivation and desire to write was just not there anymore.

But that being said in the past few days something has clicked in me, I started to really miss writing and creating content for you, and as a result my mind started to think about the future of lifewithfernie.com and the sort of topics I would love to talk about in upcoming posts. I feel as if I want to make a few changes to my blog and focus on what I really want to create rather than what I believe you would want to read about.

If I am being honest with you, before my break from bogging I feel as if my love for blogging had deteriorated a little. I got myself so caught up in how can this make money, or what posts will get me the most views and this resulted in loosing why I really enjoyed blogging to begin with. I feel as if I lost my spark and individuality and I am so ready to bring that all back!

blogging means so much to me, its a chance to sit back and relax and the end of a busy day or share experiences and thoughts with you, maybe even give you some advice and tips and tricks along the way also. Blogging is not my full time job its my hobby and I love it for just that.

I hope to publish one post a week at 3.00pm on Saturdays, previously writing multiple posts a week amounted to so much pressure and stress and it just was not enjoyable anymore. For now one post a week sounds perfect for me and I am excited for what’s to come in the future!

I hope what I am saying kind of makes sense? I have written and re written this post so many times its all starting to look the same haha! I wanted to end this post with what I have planned for future posts, I feel like this is the perfect time to sort of re launch my blog and write about topics I am truly passionate about and interested in. If you want to keep up to date with me I would love it if you would subscribe to me, don’t feel you have to though ❤

 Posts to expect from Lifewithfernie.com

  • Days In The life
  •  Recipe’s
  • Organisation And Cleaning
  • Womens Health
  •  Living Eco-Friendly
  • Mental Health

These are obviously very brief descriptions of what is to come and I would love to hear what you would like to see more off in the upcoming weeks

Do you need a Pal?

Today’s post is a post I have never done before, but when the creators of a brand new social app asked me for a review, I had to say yes! I spend a lot of my time clued to my phone usually on social media so a new app to try really felt exciting and just my cup of tea!

**Disclaimer**

While this post is sponsored, all thoughts and opinions are my own and honest.I will only work with brands and products that I feel my readers would enjoy or I feel would be a perfect fit for my blog and brand.

What is the app?

30725570_10209306911668422_3963707257417367552_nThe App Pal describes itself as a free app where you can meet people around you, and you are able to create or join activities and make new friends in the same areas to you. I believe this describes the app perfectly.

Availability

I believe the app is available for all android and Iphone users. And can be downloaded here….

Is it easy to use?
30742361_10209306906708298_6262389439457132544_nAfter downloading the app and setting up a profile. The app gives you a little tutorial on how to use the app. I personally found this really helpful as the overall look of the app was a little confusing to work out. After the tutorial I felt I had a really good idea about how to get the most out of the app.

Who would benefit from the app?

I personally wouldn’t use this app, I love the concept of meeting new people however this triggers my anxiety massively! I believe the app would be a really useful tool for people that have moved to new areas and wanting to meet new people with similar interests. It would be perfect for university students in particular.

Would I recommend it to a friend?

30728487_10209306906388290_7583554240501514240_nYes! I would 100% recommend this to a friend, I would however really stress the importance of keeping safe and the dangers of meeting people online. I feel this app runs similar risks as dating sites and caution should be taken when using it.

Overall Thoughts

I love this app and I feel it could really appeal to some people, however for me it’s just not for me and I will be uninstalling. The overall app runs really smoothly and I have not come across any glitches or anything. The interface is bright appealing and overall really easy to read. I also love that the app is free! I really think this app could really help people that may feel isolated and lonely and with that in mind I rate this app even more.

I would rate this app a good 6/10!

I hope you don’t mind a really different kind of post from me, but I actually really enjoyed reviewing something a little different from the norm. I’ll be back with a beauty related post next so make sure your subscribed to me so you don’t miss it!

A Summer Ready Home

With Spring in full swing and summer getting closer, I thought I would talk about everything I am doing to get my home summer ready. I love giving everything a good deep clean and organise, so a change in season is the perfect excuse to do it once again! I feel so much more relaxed knowing my home is as clean and tidy as physically possible to begin the summer. Summer can be so busy with holidays and visitors that sometimes the housework and keeping on top of the organisation can be forgotten, Summers are meant for having fun with family and friends so relax and dont let the housework hold you back!

Below is my easy to follow guide to create a summer ready home!

Where to Start?

I aim to go through a room a day, Some rooms are larger than others and will need more sorting so allow myself to do these rooms on  those days where I have very little planned. I tackle a room a day following this basic routine;

  1. Tidy
  2. Clean
  3. De-clutter

I find using this easy to follow step by step method is the easiest way to get your home summer ready. Its simple and not to overwhelming. I love following it!

What To Use?

IMG_4671If your anything like me, knowing exactly what products I need to clean and how to do it can be overwhelming. there are so many products available and knowing which to choose can be scary. I personally love walking into a freshly cleaned room and it to smell amazing. That why I have found myself with a rather large collection off Zoflora. I adore this stuff! basically if you dont already know, zoflora is  concentrated disinfectant that can be used in hundreds of different ways! and they come is loads of IMG_4675amazing smells. Just hop on to pinterest and search uses for zoflora and you will be amazed!

I love using it to clean my whole kitchen pretty much floor to ceiling, when I am finished the room smells incredible for hours, For this clean I decided to use these two spring scented zoflora, I love the “hello Spring” and I am sure I am on at least my 3rd bottle of the stuff.IMG_4683[1]

TOP TIP! Keep your old reed diffusers and re-fill them with neat Zoflora they work amazingly well as a read diffuser and they are so much cheaper too!

Oven Cleaning

Cleaning the oven can be a messy and smelly business. that can IMG_4681take ages and can leave you feeling all achy. this certainly does not sound fun! I discovered this Oven Pride kit and I love it. Its a deep cleaning kit that has everything you need to get your oven sparkly clean! I follow all the instructions on the box to the letter, however I leave it for around 30 hours to do its stuff, rather than the recommended overnight suggestion. This is the easiest and most effective way of cleaning my oven and I recommend it to everyone!

What Next?

Re Organise-

After everything has been cleaned a de cluttered, I like to spend some more time re organising. this makes the whole home feel almost brand new and refreshed. I like to move furniture around in the living room and bedrooms and organise my kitchen cupboards in different ways. I enjoy finding new photos and ornaments to spice up shelving units and windows. I love doing this part, I find it so relaxing.

TOP TIP! Search your charity shops for new home ware, this can really change up the look of your home without breaking the bank.

Get Green-

IMG_4670[1]I enjoy doing this all year round, however with warmer weather approaching I feel this is even more important. I find filling a home with fresh flowers and plants, helps create a bright and happy area to live in. With an English summer being far from tropical, I find injecting colour in every room in the form of brightly coloured flowers creates a happy and sunny atmosphere and they also look beautiful so what is there not to love! If your budget is tight I really recommend popping to your local Aldi Or Lidl their flowers are super cheap and last for ages. I especially love their Roses for around the £2 mark!

TOP TIP! I personally find roses always look too busy with all their leaves on, so I take them all off, I love the look this gives, even in a old pasta sauce jar! Anything can be a vase.

Have a Tick-list day-

This has got got be something that I find the hardest to try and do. I allow myself a whole day to sit and work through my to do list. Not only will you benefit from having all those jobs ticked of your list. you will also feel amazing to. Working through and crossing off items from a to do list is so important in order to spring clean the mind. A clean and tidy home will be no good if your brain is all busy with endless jobs to do.

TOP TIP! Before starting, spend sometime (preferably with a cuppa tea) to write absolutely everything you have to do down, maybe categorise them in order of priority or area of life. This will give you an easy to guide to follow for the day and you wont feel so overwhelmed.

A Perfect start!

by now you have probably spent what feels like forever cleaning and organising. Your home looks amazing and your brain is free from things to do. Its now time to relax and enjoy your home and start making those all important plans for summer. I like to throw myself a pamper night to celebrate my hard work, this may sound silly but it really does but the cheery on top of the cake! I like to run a bubble bath and use all my “special” products and maybe even buy some brand new ones to try. I will allocate almost a whole afternoon and evening for eating yummy food,  binge watching TV and pampering myself to the max. A perfect start to the best summer ever!

If you have anymore tips for getting your home summer ready let me know in the comments!

Treats To Your Door Review

I was recently asked by a brand new company called Treats to your door to review one of their boxes. After a little bit of research into who this company was I was thrilled. My weakness is sweeties so anything to fuel this is a yes from me! I was asked to purchase one box at the price of £3.50inc deliveryand then review it. The company has promised to send out an additional 2 boxes free of charge which I thought was extremely kind.

Placing An Order

This was super easy to do, I believe they are Instagram based comapny so to order a box I sent them a DM message to which they replied really quickly. I passed on my shipping details and payed via paypal. I received an order confirmation email within seconds of placing the order. I cant fault this at all. Great service.

Delivery

Unfortunately I cant give this a shining review. Delivery took over 4 weeks. I do however understand that the snow fall earlier this month threw a massive spanner in the works and boxes had gone missing and took a while to be delivered. this is completely  understandable and expected if I am honest. When I contacted Treats to your door questioning where my parcel is they replied very apologetic and explained the issues they were having with the snow. At the end of this message they explained if I hadn’t received my box within the next couple of days please get back in touch.

With that in mind I waited still very pleased with the overall service. A week went by and still no parcel so I messaged again. To my surprise I had no reply. I continued contacting them with no replies. I was very disappointed.

The Package

After a few people on twitter started discussing the company and explaining they had the same issues as me, I had kinda given up hope of receiving my box. but then to my surprise my box was delivered! the box itself was extremely bent up with a huge hole in it. and peering through I could see that a lot of the sweets were loose in the box.

Treats to your doorThe box itself was plain with a hand written address. when I opened the box I was greeted by a little thank you note that explained they were sorry for the delay. (Lovely touch) and they explained what sweets I had received. The box was plain and presentation was sort of IMG_0205bland. I think some sort of tissue paper or some sort of colour would really make this box stand out, but all companies have to start somewhere. Some of the sweets where wrapped in a little plastic wallet which made the perfect little snack size. Unfortunately I assume due to transit a lot of my sweets had fallen out of these little plastic pockets.

The Sweets

In my box I received:

  • Love hearts
  • white chocolate Jazzies
  • Fried Eggs
  • Strawbs

All the sweets tasted amazing and where all off high quality. I could not fault them at all! I wish the box did contain a few more sweets but I’m greedy so I will always want more haha!

Overall I would give the box a 6/10 a think its a really lovely idea that with a little more work could easily become a 10 out of 10!

How To Fall Asleep

If there is one thing I love that’s sleep, I would sleep all day if the world would let me. But sometimes I find it hard to get off to dream land after a busy day, For today’s post I am going to share with you my top tips for a good night sleep!

Wind Down Time

I always find I really struggle to get of to sleep if my brain is all busy and going at 100 miles and hour. To avoid this I try and allow myself half an hour to an hour of wind down quite time before I want to go to sleep. I find reading a “easy read” book or a easy watch TV program works the best. Nothing to stimulating basically.

A Warm Drink

To accompany my wind down time I like to have a hot drink. Nothing with Caffeine in though of course! I love a chamomile tea or a hot chocolate these make me feel all cosy and sleepy or even just a decaffeinated earl grey tea.

Lavender Oil
How to fall asleepThis has got to be the thing I recommend the most! A few drops of lavender oil on my pillow, soles of my feet, wrist and behind my ears. Work a charm on getting me of to sleep. I really notice that I don’t have a good night sleep if I don’t use my lavender oil. If you don’t use it already you must! I really recommend the Miaroma Soothing Lavender oil. Its currently on sale at Holland And Barrett to. When buying essential oils make sure they are an essential oil and not a fragrance oil. fragrance oils have the lovely smells but without the amazing health benefits of an essential oil.

Avoid Naps

Sometimes it’s so tempting to have a afternoon nap however I find if I do this I struggle to sleep at bedtime, I was once told if you are desperate for a afternoon power nap limit it to just 20mins this should be enough to get you through the day

Meditation

My final tip is something I love doing. I find I will always nod off rather quickly if I lay  still in bed and imagine each part of my body relaxing. Starting with my toes I imagine each part of my body becoming completely relaxed I do this all the way up my body. I am left feeling  relaxed and sleepy. This technique has been used in basic meditation for years and really helps me fall asleep.

Hopefully now you feel you have the right tools for a good night sleep. If you have any more tips you think I should try let me know!

Custard Cream Cake!

Today me and Liam decided we would spend our afternoon baking. Baking is something we both love to do together. We have always loved baking together and during our 5 and a half years together we have baked and eaten a lot of cakes! Today we felt like trying to bake something new. After a little bit of googling and pinteresting recipes we came across the lovely Jane from www.janespatisserie.com Her website is filled with hundreds of amazing cakes to bake and try. Her website is well worth a visit!

You can follow my Pinterest here

We loved the look of so many cakes but settled on making her Custard Cream Cupcakes. How delish!

You can find the exact recipe we followed here…

All the ingredients were easy to find and we had most of them sitting in our cupboards. The recipe was also so easy to follow, if we can do it anyone can!

As tradition with baking me and Liam both had a little taste of the cake batter and it tasted exactly like a custard cream! It tasted amazing and we could not wait to try them when cooked.

We gave the cakes an extra 5 minuets in the oven than Jane recommends and the cakes came out perfectly golden brown on top. The had a lovely rise and looked a perfect shape for decorating. After cooling we made up the butter cream. We added to much butter to this and it ended up a little softer than we would of liked, if we had more icing sugar this could of been easily fixed but not to worry it still tasted glorious! Jane decorated hers beautifully, us on the other hand just chucked the icing on and placed half a custard cream biscuit on the top. (our icing was not thick enough to hold a whole one)

Taste Test

At the end of the day this is the most important part of baking. I had high hopes for the overall taste of the cake as along the way it tasted incredible! Unfortunately the cake its self felt rather dense and the cooked cake had lost a fair bit of the custard cream flavouring.,However the icing tasted amazing I could eat bowls of that stuff and of course the custard cream on top was as yummy as always. Overall I would give these cakes a good 7/10 and Liam gave them a solid 8.5/10

If you have any recipes you think I should try, let me know! I am all for eating some more cakes haha!

Celebrating International Women’s Day

It’s international woman’s day and I feel it’s super important to give it a little bit of acknowledgement. Today is a day to celebrate all things woman from admiring great historical women who changed the world for ever, showing how much you love the woman in your life or even giving each other some extra support and encouragement however you choose to celebrate today make it your own. Do something that makes you feel empowered, strong and amazing. Take a moment out of your day to celebrate the most important thing in the world…YOU!

Empowered women, Empower women

In honour of international women’s day I decided that one of the things I wanted to do today was to take sometime out of the day to sit and reflect about how incredible I am. Now I dont want this to come across big headed or cocky but I think one of the most amazing all be it at times the most difficult thing you can do, is celebrate what you love about yourself and everything that makes you feel amazing inside.

So with that in mind for today’s post I am going to be sharing with you 10 things I want to celebrate about me!

  1. I love My sense of Humour, I get it from my dad and grandad and although at times it has got me in trouble, I love it!
  2. I adore being a guide leader, I love watching the girls become young women, with their own personalities and big ideas.
  3. I am so proud of myself for overcoming a patch of terrible mental health. I feel so much stronger than I ever did and I am sure this is down to this.
  4. My passion for my blog can’t be ignored, I am so proud of my achievements and never imagined it would be where is is today. I have worked so hard and it’s definitely starting to shine through!
  5. It’s took time but I am starting to feel comfortable being me, don’t get me wrong there are some days where I want to changeable few things but all in all I am happy with what I see in the mirror.
  6. I have a plan. I love that I have a plan for the future. I love the way my future is looking to be and can’t wait for it. The future used to scare me a little so now knowing I have a plan makes me feel so much more at ease and now I can’t wait for it all to unravel. Off course I expect for things not to go according to plan but I am ready for those challenges.
  7. I enjoy being unique. I am the complete opposite of a “stereotypical” 20 year old, I don’t have huge circles of friends that I go partying weekly with or anything. My social calendar is pretty much non existent and I love that. I feel so happy that I can devote all my time to guiding, work, blogging and Liam. This suits me so much and I love it, I am so content and happy with how this has all happened for me.
  8. Becoming the “perfect housewife” has always been something I long to achieve. And I am finally getting there. Although me and Liam both work, he works much longer shifts than me and hardly has days off. That’s why I have took on the role of the cleaning and cooking and life organising. I love doing this and I love how hard I work to become the best I possibly can be.
  9. I love how I get excited over everything and anything. I find excitement in my everyday life and This always makes me so happy. Find excitement in everything you do was something I read a few years ago and it stuck and once you start doing it it’s catching and you can’t stop!
  10. Watching Liam’s nieces and nephew grow up has been such an honour and to be part of their life is amazing and I wouldn’t change it for the world. Spending time with them is so precious to me and hearing them laugh makes the tough days I go through disappear. They bring me such joy and they always encourage me to see the positive in everything. They have helped me smile on even the hardest of days and for that I will forever be grateful. They have taught me so much and have definitely shaped who I am today.

Okay I know number 10 wasn’t exactly something I love about myself but it felt kind of fitting to include it. I would love for you to comment something’s you want to celebrate about yourself or how you are celebrating international women’s day. I Would love the comments to be a sea filled with so much self love!

Day In The Life….

For Today’s post I thought I would do a bit of a day in the life kinda post… I have not done anything like this before so I hope you enjoy it!

Tuesday 27th February 2018

Today I woke up at around 6.30 and continued to snooze my alarm till 7.00 this is so typical of me and it’s a habit I need to break! I popped the kettle on and then made the bed I love making the bed I find it super satisfying just me that finds this? Anyway yesterday I couldn’t find my Fitbit charger so I turned the flat upside down to try and find it, Anyluck? No! I don’t understand how something can just vanish so I headed to Argos on-line and ordered a new one! It cost a whopping £17 so I am not to impressed!

By 8.00 my tea had gone cold so I re heated it in the microwave I am forever doing this! And then made myself a huge bowl of porridge, I am working today so I need all the energy I can gather, it is only a short three hour shift but the short ones tire me out so much haha! While the porridge was heating up I gave the kitchen a quick tidy and wipe over with bouquet Zoflora (I forgot to do this last night!) I also popped a Load of washing on aswell it’s amazing just how much you can get done in two minuets.

While I scoffed up my breakie I checked my social media, I also had a read and comment of some blog posts too. I do this pretty much every morning and I love it. Leave your blog links in the comments. I  would love to discover some new ones! While I was doing this I created a Vero account would love a cheeky little follow over there…Life With Fernie Thankyou!

28641509_10209003365479957_1736312342_o
Skincare products I used today.

28504584_10209003364319928_134600312_oAt 9.00 it was time to get ready for the day. As I’m only at work today I opted for minimal makeup and hair in a pony tail it took just 20minuits to do including my skincare routine and getting dressed, so I decided to spend a good half an hour or so giving the flat a good speed clean and tidy and put another load of washing on it’s not stop glam for me today!

10 o clock came and it was time to think about a cup of tea! I was gasping for one after all the cleaning! I was rung up by Work asking if so could come in earlier so with my cup of tea I had an extremely early lunch! You see that’s the downside to working shorts shifts over lunch time! No chance to eat lunch at a sensible time! Today for lunch I decided on a tomato and herb mug shot pasta, if you28554977_10209003364039921_680675365_o haven’t tried them you must, they are delicious and are less than 1% fat. With that I had a Mediterranean herb wrap to dip in my pasta (is that weird?) and finally a bag of sweet popcorn and a Alpen bar. That should keep me going till Tea time later!

I got in from work at around half 3 and oh me oh my I was starving! I literally could not stop eating! I decided to cook an extremely early tea! Tonight we had sweet potato chips (homemade) with chicken kievs and veggies yummy! We decided to cook together today which was really lovely! I love cooking with Liam,I wish we did it more often.28504420_10209003363279902_593206300_o

With Tea in the oven it was time for a well deserved cuppa. I was super busy at work so it was well needed! I just can’t get enough of earl grey tea, I’m pretty sure it’s becoming a serious problem!

28641113_10209003363119898_1993598660_oAfter we had eaten our tea I washed up and put everything away! This is such a good habit to get into, if you can wash and dry up straight away it always feels like your winning at life! I also took this opportunity to make me and Liam’s lunches for tommorow, we’re both working so it’s a lunch box kinda day.  I am feeling so bloody organised!

It’s now 5.15 and I am going to sign off this post here before it gets mega long! My plans for the evening are fairly boring but I can’t wait for them! My plans are to catch up with some accounts, edit and upload this post then have a pamper session and binge watch Friends with Liam and I can’t wait for it!

I hope you have enjoyed reading a totally random post from me! I have loved writing it and it’s put me in the best mood! If you have liked this and want to see more of them please let me know! I may make this a weekly kinda series. Let me know what you think?

Cheerio For Now,
